Four important questions about your desires:

  1. What do I genuinely want?

  2. Why do I want it? Where’s this desire coming from?

  3. What will be the cost of achieving this desire?

  4. Am I ready to pay the price?

Trust is built slowly.

Trust is destroyed quickly.

Trust can make complex things possible.

The absence of trust can make simple things impossible.

Trust powers relationships, businesses, nations.

Trust is as precious as it is fragile.

Because you've already glimpsed the possibilities. You won't merely assume "this is the only way".

Most people consume information but don't contemplate and create on it.

They are not CS grads from top universities.

They didn’t start their careers as Google PM’s.

They have unique backgrounds (education, career path, hometown) that make them view the world differently.

  1. It’s 10 times easier to work on something you care about.

  2. As you take on more, your capacity grows.

Academic papers are so hard to read.

But the best ones are loaded with wisdom and surprising research.

By publishing summaries, you‘ll learn fast and attract an intelligent audience.

Whenever possible, try to incorporate iterations in your work.

Writers and painters don't create the perfect art on the first attempt.

They start with a rough idea. With every iteration, they add more details and remove the unnecessary ones.

Don't try to do it all in one go.

It’s all right to start reading a book from the section you most want to read.

Starting is often the most difficult part.

Good design is removing steps, understanding motivations, making it clearer, more navigable, faster, easier... it is how it works not how it looks.

@paulg Lisp is actually an area where people already looked at and did find better solutions in the form of Haskell in the early 90s. A solution which moreover has kept steadily improving since and shows increasingly strong momentum.

There are two places to find new ideas: places no one has looked before, and places where people have looked, but not hard enough. Kids are taught that big ideas come from the former, but the latter may actually be more promising.

@dennybritz I think graphs are the correct mental model and API for deep learning -- but not graph of ops like a TF graphdef, instead, graph of layers. Recursive graphs of high-level building blocks.

Which is also how deep NNs are visualized in pretty much every paper or textbook ever...

Great overview of upcoming TF changes. Personally I agree with the author and I'm not a huge fan of eager mode either. Is it just because I'm used to thinking in terms of a graph? Is eager really superior?

My go-to example of this is PCA. If you know how to diagonalize a 5x5 matrix by hand, then you "know the math" behind PCA. But this gives you absolutely no understanding of what PCA is, what it does, and why it works. You need higher-level mental models.

Many people in engineering believe that to understand something, it is necessary and sufficient to have a low-level mathematical description of that thing. That you need to "know the math behind it". In nearly all cases, it is neither sufficient nor at all necessary - far from it

The key insight is that finding the right programming community FOR YOU is a matter of language/community <-> mindset fit. The technical differences are mostly dwarfed by the emotional ones. Say, a Ruby mind trapped in a Java workload is a terrible waste.
