autonomy

[AI Synthesis]: Autonomy is living with restored awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy—present-moment candor free from compulsive games. It requires a friendly divorce from parental and cultural scripts, even at social cost, and a continual fight against sliding back.

The three capacities

  • Autonomy shows up as the expression or recovery of three abilities: awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy.
  • Beyond filling time until death or Santa Claus, awareness transcends classification, spontaneity rises above past programming, and intimacy is more rewarding than games—yet all three can frighten the unprepared.
  • There may be little hope for the human race as a whole, but there is hope for individual members of it.

Awareness

  • Awareness requires being here and now—seeing and hearing in one's own way, not only the way one was taught (the jay/sparrow lesson).
  • The aware person is alive because he knows how he feels, where he is, and when it is; he knows that after he dies the trees will still be there but he will not be there to look at them again, so he wants to see them now with as much poignancy as possible.
  • He is living in the present moment with the environment that is here—the sky and the trees as well as the feeling of motion.

Spontaneity

  • Freedom to choose and to express Parent, Adult, and Child feelings in varied ways.
  • Liberation from the compulsion to play games and from having only the feelings one was taught to have.
  • Liberation of one's own native feelings, no longer steered by others' prescriptions.

Intimacy

  • An aware person's spontaneous, game-free candidness—eidetic perception freed, innocence of an uncontaminated Child ego state, living in the here and now.
  • Intuitive perception evokes affection; candor mobilizes positive feeling.
  • They encourage the other person to speak freely by inviting direct eye contact.
  • Intimacy is essentially a function of the natural Child; without game interference the outcome tends to be positive—most infants seem loving.
  • Intimacy degrades when adapted to Parental influence.

Path to autonomy

  • Exclude the grip of tribe or family tradition.
  • Discard influences from parents, society, and culture—fully reckon with modern social demands.
  • Gain personal and social control so behavior classes become free choices under one's will.
  • Accept partial or total sacrifice of benefits from one's current social circle.
  • Give up the easy rewards of being a Sulk or a Jerk.
  • Essence: a friendly divorce from one's parents (and other Parental influences)—they may be visited agreeably, but no longer dominate.
  • Overthrow is never final; there is a continual battle against sinking back into the old ways.

Actions

  • Once a day, pause to name feeling, place, and time before acting—train Adult awareness of the present environment.
  • When an exchange feels scripted, choose one spontaneous, game-free response (a direct feeling or question) instead of the usual move.
  • Practice seeing without immediate labeling—notice the thing before the Parent name for it.
  • Expect social cost when dropping a game circle; plan which benefits you are willing to sacrifice.
